About Just Falling
Just Falling is a spicy floral chypre eau de parfum for women, inspired by Aromatics Elixir by Clinique. It is the boldest fragrance in our women's range and it does not care whether you like it at first.
The opening is bitter and green. Galbanum is sharp and resinous, rose arrives almost immediately, chamomile adds a herbal, slightly medicinal note, and coriander and rosewood bring dry spice. There is nothing welcoming about the first ten minutes, and that is deliberate: this is a fragrance built in the old style, where the opening is a doorway rather than a destination.
The heart is enormous and beautiful. Jasmine, ylang-ylang, tuberose, carnation, orris and lily of the valley blend into a dense, spicy, powdery bouquet that smells nothing like modern perfume. It is heady, warm and slightly overwhelming, in the way that a very strong personality is.
The base is where it becomes unforgettable. Patchouli, oakmoss and cistus create a damp, resinous earthiness, sandalwood and vetiver add structure, and musk, amber and a touch of civet give it that warm animalic hum. It lasts an extraordinarily long time.
Wear it on cold evenings, sparingly, to dinners and occasions where you want to be a presence. One or two sprays. Give it an hour before judging it; almost everyone who loves this style disliked it on first meeting.

If you love Aromatics Elixir by Clinique, Just Falling shares its DNA in the bitter herbal opening, the huge spicy floral heart and the mossy, resinous, faintly animalic base that gives the original its formidable reputation.
Ours is marginally gentler in the first fifteen minutes. The galbanum is a little softer and the chamomile less medicinal, which makes our opening slightly easier to meet, though the overall shape and intensity remain. Our patchouli is also a shade sweeter in the dry-down. Both are exceptionally long-lasting, often more than eight hours, and both project strongly. Just Falling is an original composition inspired by that classic rather than a reproduction of it, and the softer opening is where it parts company.

When to wear it
Cold evenings only, and with a very light hand. Autumn and winter nights, dinners, theatre and occasions with some formality to them are where it belongs; it is far too much for warm weather or an open-plan office. One or two sprays on skin, never on clothing, as it lingers for days on fabric. Start with the 30ml at R70.

Why does it smell harsh at first?
The galbanum and chamomile in the opening are deliberately bitter. Give it an hour and the floral heart and mossy base emerge, which is where the fragrance actually lives.
How strong is it?
Extremely. One spray is often enough, and two is the maximum for most wearers. It projects for hours and lingers on fabric for days.
Who does this suit?
Someone with confidence and a taste for classic perfumery. It is a difficult, rewarding fragrance and it is not a good choice for a first perfume or a safe gift.
