About After Midnight Before Dawn
After Midnight Before Dawn is a powdery floral oriental eau de parfum for women, inspired by Classique by Jean Paul Gaultier. It is the closest thing we make to old-fashioned glamour.
The opening is fruity and faintly sharp. Pear and mandarin lead with a juicy brightness, orange adds sweetness, and star anise cuts through with a liquorice-like spice that gives the whole thing an unexpected edge. Rose is there from the very first minute, less as a flower than as a soft pink glow behind everything else.
The heart is where it becomes properly beautiful. Iris and orchid bring that cool, powdery, almost cosmetic texture that people associate with fine perfumery, ylang-ylang adds creamy warmth, and plum and ginger keep a thread of fruit and spice running underneath. It smells like a dressing table, in the most flattering possible sense.
Then it softens and stays. Musk, vanilla and woody amber build a warm, skin-like finish that is comforting rather than sugary, and it lasts well into the small hours. This is a fragrance for evenings with some occasion to them: dinners, anniversaries, parties where people dress properly. Ours leads more openly with fruit. The pear and plum are juicier, giving a brighter opening than the original's more immediately powdery start, and our star anise is a touch more noticeable. The dry-down is comparable, though ours adds a little more woody amber for structure. Longevity is good at around seven hours, with moderate projection that stays personal. It is inspired by that fragrance and shares a similar character, but it is an original composition rather than a reproduction of it.
